Now, the American Dietetic Association (ADA) is touting another preventive method for people who are at risk of developing these conditions. According to a paper published in the American Journal of Lifestyle Medicine, eating tomatoes and tomato products can help decrease the risk of cancer, cardiovascular disease and osteoporosis.
"Tomatoes contain high levels of the powerful antioxidant lycopene," said lead author Kristin Reimers, who serves as nutrition manager of ConAgra Foods. "In addition, tomatoes serve as a significant source of vitamin C, fiber and potassium in the American diet."
She added that canned products - such as tomato paste and sauce - boast about seven times more lycopene than fresh tomatoes.
The nutrients in this fruit may not only contribute to a waist-trimming diet, but pack a powerful punch when it comes to reducing the risk of serious chronic health issues.
People who eat nutritious meals and buy Plavix may be able to maintain heart health and live longer, more disease-free lives.
