Treatment for Ewing's Sarcoma may benefit prostate cancer patients

As men grow older, they are often advised by their doctors to keep a closer eye on their prostate health and may buy Flomax from a Canadian online pharmacy to address any growth in the gland. A recent study from the Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center suggests that a drug developed to treat a rare childhood disease could also prevent the progression of prostate cancer.
The paper, which was published in the journal Public Library of Science ONE, revealed that YK-4 279 - a medication for Ewing's Sarcoma - could prevent tumors from spreading.
Studies have shown that up to 70 percent of prostate cancer cells express proteins that help them proliferate. Researchers applied YK-4 279 to a group of tumor cells and found that the treatment successfully prevented the proteins from functioning correctly.
"This agent does not kill prostate cancer cells, but limits their ability to spread, which could be hugely beneficial in patients," said lead investigator Aykut Uren. "This study is an early proof of principle that such an approach might be feasible in the clinic, but we have a lot of work to refine and test the drug."
