For example, two studies published in the journal Cell Metabolism revealed that the diabetes drug rosiglitazone - which belongs to a class called thiazolidinediones (TZDs) - can also impart vascular benefits to those who take it.
Lead author Jonathan Graff and his colleagues from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center explained that these findings may help pave the way for the development of more effective treatments.
They found that TZDs remodel fat tissue, which could lead to weight gain. However, treatment with these drugs also stimulated the release of a hormone called adiponectin, which resulted in the relaxation of the blood vessels of diabetic mice.
"Our study emphasizes the importance of adipose tissue-derived adiponectin in response to TZD," the researchers said. "This suggests that the development of pharmacological agents that can elevate adiponectin may represent an effective therapeutic approach for treating vascular diseases induced by diabetes."
