Vitamin C deficiency may be tied to problems in heart failure patients

People who are worried about whether they are getting enough vitamins in their diet may be interested to know they can buy cheap supplements through a Canadian internet pharmacy. Nutrient deficiencies can lead to health problems. One recent study from the University of Ulsan in South Korea suggests that low levels of vitamin C can be detrimental to the health of patients with heart failure.

Researchers conducted an experiment in which they enrolled 212 heart failure patients and had them fill out a food diary for four days. Blood samples were also taken to screen for high sensitivity C-Reactive protein (hsCRP), a marker for inflammation.

Subjects were monitored for one year.

Results showed that 39 percent of patients were deficient in vitamin C. About 46 percent had high measurements of hsCRP, and 29 percent experienced cardiac events, such as a visit to the emergency room.

Data analysis showed that subjects who did not consume an adequate amount of vitamin C were 2.4 times more likely to have high levels of hsCRP, implying that a deficiency in the nutrient is linked to inflammation in these patients. High levels of this marker, combined with low levels of vitamin C, were associated with a nearly two-fold increase in the likelihood of death within the year, as presented at the American Heart Association's Scientific Sessions 2011.
