Evista demonstrated advantages with regard to toxicity and tolerability, substantially reducing the incidence of endometrial cancer, uterine hyperplasia and thromboembolic events in patients.
"These data are good news for postmenopausal women who want to reduce their risk of breast cancer," said lead author D. Lawrence Wickerham, quoted by the source. "I see women each week in a high-risk clinic, and I end up telling one or two of them that they have breast cancer. I'd love for that part of my job to go away. These data are a step in that direction."
Researchers administered Evista to a total of 19,747 high-risk postmenopausal women over a period of five years. The drug successfully reduced the incidence of breast cancer by 50 percent at the end of the study.
