Potty Training by the Ages

Potty training is a big step in a child's life. There is no set age at which the potty training routine should commence. The right time depends on your child's development and readiness. There are many things to consider when making the move from diapers to the porcelain. Here they are:

Girls versus Boys

On average, girls are out of diapers at two years and nine months and boys at two years and 10 months

The American Academy of Pediatrics says that children's elimination muscles reach full maturity at 12-24 months. The average of maturity is 18 months.

69 percent of girls and 53 percent of boys are potty trained by the age of three

Girls are 50 percent more likely than boys to potty train early

Generally, boys learn to pee standing by seeing others (their father) do it

Tricks for boys:

- Cheerios: Put some Cheerios in the toilet and it becomes a game for him to aim

- Let him pick his big-boy underwear

- Observation: He will learn and become more comfortable by watching daddy

- Celebrate success

Tricks for girls:

- Have them teach their favorite doll

- Watch and learn

- Use the right equipment and let her know it is all hers

- Motivate with cool underwear

- Celebrate success

Potty training in the U.S.:

- On average, $75 per month per house is spent on disposable diapers. That's almost $1,000 per year

- In 1962, 90 percent of children were out of diapers by age two and a half. That number plummets to only 20 percent by 1998

- 80 percent of babies worldwide are potty trained by age one

- In the U.S., most babies start potty training between 18 and 24 months

- North America is one of the few places where it has been acceptable for babies to be in diapers up to age 2, 3 and 4.

Why might a child take longer?

- Too young

- Toddler independence: Child might be testing out the limits of his/her independence

- Caution: Some kids have a hard time adapting to changes

- Fear: Your child may not really understand the toilet and therefore is afraid of it

- busy: Your child may be having too much fun playing to want to concentrate regularly on learning how to use the potty
